Praying in Jesus' Name: What You Have Been Saying All Along

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
You said it this morning over coffee that had gone cold. You said it last night over a child who would not settle. You have said it at hospital beds and kitchen tables and in the car at a red light, and somewhere along the way you stopped hearing it. It became the sound a prayer makes when it is finished.
Then one day you wondered. Am I saying it right? Is it a password? Does it do anything?
Here is what I want to show you. You were never saying it wrong. You were saying something larger than you knew.
The short answer: To pray in Jesus’ name is not to add a formula to the end of a prayer. It is to come to the Father carried by everything Jesus is: His person, His authority, His finished work. “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” (John 14:13) The words at the end of your prayer are not a key you turn. They are a door that was already opened for you.
What a Name Carried
Start where the Bible starts, with what a name was for.
In Hebrew the word is shem. It is not a label on a jar. A person’s shem was their character, their reputation, the whole weight of who they were. To act in someone’s name was to act with their standing behind you. When Scripture says “the name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10), it is not saying that four letters protect you. It is saying that everything God is protects you.
So when Moses stood barefoot in front of a bush that burned and did not burn up, the question he asked was the right one. Who do I say sent me? And God answered: “I AM WHO I AM.” (Exodus 3:14) That is the Name. Not a title He was given, but the One who simply, always, is.
Israel guarded that Name until no one would say it aloud. Then a Galilean carpenter stood in the temple courtyard and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” (John 8:58) The men who heard Him reached for stones. They understood exactly what He had said.
The Name Given to Him
The angel told Joseph what to call the child: “you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21) The name is Yeshua, and inside it sits the Name from the bush. YHWH saves. The One who met Moses in the fire has a face now, and hands, and a name a mother could call across a yard.
Then watch what the Father does with that name after the cross. “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.” (Philippians 2:9–10) The Greek word for name is onoma, and Paul chooses it with care. The name above every name is not a bigger label. It is the highest standing in all of creation, and it was given to a Man who had just died the lowest death the empire knew how to invent.
That is the Name you have been praying in.
What “In My Name” Means
Jesus said it three times in one evening, the last night before He died. “Whatever you ask in My name, that I will do.” (John 14:13) “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” (John 14:14) “Whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.” (John 15:16)
The Greek is en tō onomati mou, in My name. It is the language of standing. A servant sent “in the name of” the king carried the king’s authority, and the king’s answer for what he did with it. When you pray in Jesus’ name, you are not borrowing a phrase. You are coming to the Father on Jesus’ standing instead of your own, which is the only standing that was ever going to get you through the door.
That is why it cannot be a formula. A formula works whether or not you know the one who wrote it. A name only works if you belong to the one who bears it. Seven men in Ephesus tried to use the name as a formula over a demon, and the demon answered them: “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” (Acts 19:15) The Name is not a word you say. It is a Person you are joined to.
When the Words Feel Empty
I said it, but it felt like I was talking to the ceiling. You know the feeling. He is a deacon who has closed every prayer the same way for thirty-one years, and last month at his wife’s bedside the words came out and he heard them, really heard them, for the first time in a decade, and they sounded like a habit. He went out to the parking lot and sat in the truck and wondered whether any of it had ever landed.
Here is what he did not know. The prayer was never carried by how the words felt in his mouth. It was carried by the One whose Name was on it. Jesus had already said what happens to a prayer in His name: “that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” The Father hears the Son in it. That was true on the days it felt like fire and on the days it felt like nothing.
Scripture to Pray In His Name
Keep these close. They are not a formula either. They are the ground you stand on when you say the words.
- “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” (John 14:13)
- “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
- “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10)
- “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (Colossians 3:17)
- “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth.” (Philippians 2:10)
A Prayer in Jesus’ Name
Pray this once slowly. Then pray it the way you always have, and notice that nothing about the words has changed except that now you know what they are carrying.
Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus. Not on my own standing, which could never get me through the door, but on His, which has already opened it. His Name is above every name, and You gave it to Him, and He has put it on me. So I ask You for what I need today the way He told me to ask, in His name, so that You are glorified in Your Son. I have said these words ten thousand times. Thank You that You heard every one. In Jesus’ name, amen.
And listen for what He has been saying over every prayer you ever closed this way:
I heard you, child. My Son’s Name was on it. I have always heard you.
You were never saying it wrong. You were saying something larger than you knew.
The Name Above Every Name Guides
Each guide opens one thing about the Name you have been praying in. New guides are added as the series continues.
The Name: what it carries
- What 'I AM WHO I AM' Means: The Name With No Settled Tense The I am who I am meaning in Exodus 3:14: the Hebrew ehyeh asher ehyeh, why its tense stays open, and what Jesus claimed with two words in John 8:58.
- What Onoma Means: Why a Name in the Bible Is a Whole Standing Onoma meaning: the Greek name word in Philippians 2:9 and Acts 4:12, the Hebrew shem beneath it, and why a name in Scripture is a whole standing, not a label.
- What Does the Name Jesus Mean in Hebrew? Yeshua, the LORD Saves What does the name Jesus mean in Hebrew? Yeshua, a short form of Joshua, 'the LORD saves,' and why the angel's words in Matthew 1:21 put the Name on a child.
