Hebrews 12:24 Meaning: The Blood That Speaks Better Things Than Abel's

You drove past the exit again this morning.

Exit 14. You have not taken it in six years. You can see the whole thing from the left lane at sixty-five: the house, the kitchen, the night you said what you said and did what you did, and the way her face changed.

By the time you pull into work the voice has finished its opening statement. You know what you did. You know what you are. It is a reasonable voice. It has the facts right.

What I want to show you is that there is another voice in that room, and it has been speaking longer than the first one, and it is not finished.

The short answer: Hebrews 12:24 says you have come “to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.” Abel’s blood cried from the ground for justice against the brother who killed him. Jesus’ blood speaks mercy for the ones who killed Him, which is all of us. And the verb is present tense. His blood is speaking now, today, for you.

The Blood That Cried From the Ground

The first blood in the Bible is a murder. Cain kills Abel in a field, and God comes asking. “And He said, ‘What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.’” (Genesis 4:10)

Blood with a voice. That is Hebrews’ picture. Abel’s blood did not lie quiet in the dirt. It spoke, and what it said was justice. In the Hebrew the word for blood there is plural, bloods, and the old rabbis heard in that plural every child Abel never had.

Hebrews mentions Abel one other time: “through it he being dead still speaks.” (Hebrews 11:4) Abel’s voice has not stopped. It is the voice of the innocent asking for the guilty to be answered.

That voice is not wrong. It is the voice you heard on the highway this morning. Something was done, and someone should answer for it.

Better Things

Now the verse. You have come, Hebrews says, “to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.” (Hebrews 12:24)

The word for “better” is kreittōn. Hebrews uses it again and again: a better hope, a better covenant, better promises, a better sacrifice. Its root is tied to strength; it means better as in stronger, higher, more able. So the blood does not speak nicer things. It speaks stronger things. Things that prevail.

Scholars read the comparison two ways, and both are fair. The Greek says only “than Abel,” and translators supply “that of.” Some take it as Jesus’ blood against Abel’s blood: one cried for justice from the ground, the other speaks mercy from heaven. Others take it as Jesus’ sacrifice against Abel’s sacrifice in Hebrews 11:4. Either way the point stands. Abel’s voice asked for the guilty to be answered. Jesus’ blood answers for them.

And look at the verb. “Speaks” is a present participle: speaking. Not spoke, once, at Calvary. Speaking. Whatever the blood said on the Friday it was shed, it is saying still.

What the Blood Is Saying

John saw the courtroom. The accuser “accused them before our God day and night,” and the saints “overcame him by the blood of the Lamb.” (Revelation 12:10–11) Two voices in the same room. The accuser reads the file. The blood answers every line of it with a single word: paid.

Paul heard it too. “Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” (Romans 8:34) Intercession is speech. He is at the Father’s right hand, talking, and the subject is you.

That is the authority in the power of the blood of Jesus. Not that it makes the accuser go quiet. That it outranks him. His voice has facts. The blood has standing, and it is still speaking.

The Blood of Sprinkling

Hebrews calls it “the blood of sprinkling,” and that is a covenant word. When Moses brought Israel into covenant at Sinai, he “took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, ‘This is the blood of the covenant which the LORD has made with you according to all these words.’” (Exodus 24:8) The blood went on them and marked them as the people the covenant was for.

Hebrews says the same has been done to you, further in than Moses could reach: “having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience.” (Hebrews 10:22) Not sprinkled on the outside of you. On your heart, where the voice from Exit 14 does its work. The blood that cleanses the conscience follows that sprinkling all the way in.

When the First Voice Is Louder

This is My blood. He is a former youth pastor who left his last church under a cloud he earned, and he sits in the back row of a different one now, three towns over. It is communion Sunday. The tray comes down the row and he takes the small cup and holds it, and the man up front reads the words Jesus said, “this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” The voice that rides with him every morning starts in on its facts. He looks at the cup. Then he drinks it.

Scripture to Hear the Blood Speak

Read these out loud. The accuser speaks; let the Word speak back.

  • “to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.” (Hebrews 12:24)
  • “And He said, ‘What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.’” (Genesis 4:10)
  • “By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.” (Hebrews 11:4)
  • “Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” (Romans 8:34)
  • “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.” (Revelation 12:11)

A Prayer When the Accuser Speaks

The blood still speaking in heaven is one thread of a longer one; following it from Genesis to Revelation is what The Power of the Blood of Jesus is for. Pray this in the car.

Father, I have been listening to the wrong voice. It has the facts, and I have let it read them to me every morning for six years. But You have told me there is another voice, and it is the blood of Your Son, and it speaks better things. It is speaking now. It is not asking You for justice against me. It is answering for me. So I am going to stop arguing with the accuser and start agreeing with the blood. What I did is paid for. What I am is Yours. Let His voice be the one I hear today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

And listen for what He has been saying over you, every morning, under the other voice:

I hear My Son’s blood, child. It has never once stopped speaking for you.

The accuser has the facts, but the blood has the last word, and it is still speaking.
